In view of the general strike called for tomorrow by USB, SLAICOBAS, CIB UNICOBAS, SNATER, USI, SICOBAS and ORSA, Prefect Gian Valerio Lombardi has ordered ATM line 1 staff to resume work from 8.45 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. The underground service will therefore be regular during Macef opening hours, i.e. until 6.00 p.m. The decision has been made because the International Home Show is taking place in these days: it is one of the most important and attended exhibitions in Milan, whose visitors would have faced predictable troubles because of the block of the local transport, and in particular of the underground line that connects Milan with the fair ground.
As stated in the prefect’s note, according to the provisional Regulation of the public transport sector, approved by the Guarantee Commission controlling the implementation of the norms on strikes in the public transport sector, “the competent territorial institutions will not perform work stoppages on the occasion that coincide with events of significant importance”. And Macef has been considered “similar to such events”.
“On behalf of the 1,900 companies exhibiting at Macef – says Enrico Pazzali, CEO at Fiera Milano – and of the many tens of thousands of trade operators coming from all over the world and attending this important exhibition, I sincerely thank Prefect Lombardi, ATM president Bruno Rota, and all workers of the public transport who will allow us to work under normal conditions even tomorrow. This decision is an act of sensitivity towards Macef, and more generally towards all big exhibitions, considered as precious business and growth opportunities for the whole community. Exhibitions represent wealth we cannot afford to compromise”.
